Enoch R and Lula M Bowlby

Updated: Dec 3, 2025

Enoch Bowlby was born in 1862 in Green County, Pennsylvania. He migrated west, first to

Colorado, then Portland, and eventually to Union County. Enoch R Bowlby and Lula M Quinn

were married on May 23, 1884. They came to the Wallowas in 1893 and took up a homestead

1.5 miles south of Enterprise. “Bowlby” stone excavated from a quarry located on their land

east of town soon became the signature building material in Enterprise during the end of the 19th century and the beginning of the 20th century.

Many of the early buildings in the commercial district of Enterprise were constructed of Bowlby stone including the Bowlby

Building, Wallowa County Courthouse (1909-1910), the Enterprise Hotel (1903), the Fraternal

Hall (1908), the Litch Building (1909), the Enterprise Mercantile and Milling Company Building

(1916) and others. Enoch Bowlby died in the Enterprise Hospital on September 24, 1938. His

remains are in Lower, Row 1, Spaces 119 and 119.
